Generic Name: Tramadol hydrochloride

Ultram [Tramadol HCl] Description

Tramadol Hydrochloride is an opioid analgesic. The medicine works like a narcotic pain reliever. It minimizes the brain's response to the signals of pain, and numbs the mind to such sensations. It is useful in treating pain in varying conditions. The medicine is considered to be a safe one, as it does not increase the risk of internal bleeding or formation of ulcers in the stomach.

Uses of Ultram

This is used for treating pain in patients who suffer from chronic diseases like cancer, or arthritis; but in osteoarthritis, it is given along with NSAIDs. Ultram is also given to treat acute musculoskeletal pain, as well as for moderate to severe pain in individuals who are recuperating from a surgery, which can also involve a dental procedure.

The safety of Ultram for children below 16 has not been established. For use in children, consult the pediatrician.

How to Use Ultram

Take the medicine exactly as prescribed. The dosage depends on the individual medical condition, and is usually given every 4-6 hours. The extended release tablets should not be crushed or chewed, but swallowed with water. The medicine can be taken without regard to food, but should be taken the same way, every time. Ultram should not be crushed and inhaled, or diluted with water and injected, for this can cause fatal results.

Missed Dose of Ultram

If you miss a dose, consult your doctor. If you remember well in time, you can take the missed dose but if time is nearing for your next dose, leave the missed dose and stick to your normal dosing pattern; don't ever double your dose.
